Buy a sustainable Halloween kids costume
Halloween has become a scary event when it comes to costumes being made from synthetic fibres and thrown away after one season of trick-o-treating.
Since setting up Atelier Spatz, the studio has always focused on making childrens costumes more sustainable. One of the reasons Jo started sewing costumes for her own kids was that she couldn’t bear dressing them in something that wouldn’t outlast one party or cling to their skin like a plastic bag. She grew up with costumes made and worn by her grand parents’ generation and she knew that natural fibres are more comfortable to wear as well as being better for the planet.
- Woolmark research found that “Every 25 seconds an Olympic-sized pool of oil is used to make synthetic clothing.”
- In 2019, The Independent newspaper reported that 2,000 tons of plastic waste is generated by Halloween costumes sold in the UK alone.
- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that “that 17,030,000 tons of textile waste was generated in 2018, with 11,300,000 tons sent to landfill.” Much of this waste can be attributed to fast fashion trends, of which, purchasing a “disposable” Halloween costume for single use is the very worst example.
Designing and making children’s costumes, we always have sustainability in mind. Whether it is the use of natural fibres, sourcing fabrics locally, or making them in small batches or made to order to reduce waste. Most of our costumes can be worn for several years, transformed into different characters and most of all_ passed on to the next generation or a good friend.
